The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, by Lisa See, is a book that has made a significant mark on me, so much so that it has persuaded me to write Credo Espoir’s first book recommendation.
The novel begins with a dream and the Akha phrase “No coincidence, No story.” It goes on to follow the life, love, and tragedy of Li-yan, a girl from the Akha village tribe in China, and how her family traditions and generations-old cultivation of tea leaves affects her throughout her journey. Through reading the book, I learned much about the Pu’er tea delicacy, the making of tea cakes, and the mental and emotional effects of the adoption of Chinese children by white American families in addition to much more. The book flows seamlessly from one scene to the next with a beautifully written plot and well-developed characters who feel as real as possible.
In an effort to reveal nothing more, I advise anyone who has the opportunity to read this book. For those who have, let us know what you think and feel free to offer any book recommendations in the comments below!
